Te Araroa

As part of our ‘Waipahihi Kakariki’ Inquiry this year, Rooms 3 and 15 are working together to plan/design the new path (‘Te Araroa’) in our new school development.

Scroll to the bottom of this page to see our latest posts.

Our first step was to look at the area which was going to be developed into Te Araroa.

Our next step was to explore, find and gather different photos of paths.  We used google docs to present our ideas.  We shared these photos with Room 15. Then we discussed and identified the materials used for each path.  Finally we listed the positive and negative features.

Here we are with Room 15, talking, sharing and recording our ideas.

Maze's Talk

Here is Jason Maze ("Maze"), our path expert, talking about types of paths, materials and other important things we need to know when putting in a path.
This is what he said...

Izaak's Talk

Here is Izaak, our Room 3 Enviro Warrior, taking us on a walk over the area where te araroa (our path) will go.
This is what he said...

L'Arte Trip

On Wednesday we visited the L'Arte Gallery to see the mosaic paths and artwork on display.   We made sketches and took notes of what we saw.  Judy, the mosaic lady, talked to us about creating mosaic art.  We asked questions and recorded her answers in our Inquiry Books.
This is what she said...

After visiting the L'Arte Gallery we had a collection of photos to help us with our path plan / design.

Blessing the Ground

On Friday 19th June Koro Mitai blessed He Manu Whenua - Birdland.  Our Senior Students joined him in a hikoi along the proposed pathway.

Fonterra Grant Application

Our next step is to apply for funding for our path.  We need lots of concrete!
We got  quote from Firth Concrete in Taupo. We need $3415.50.

Now we are applying to Fonterra Grass Roots Fund to help us buy the concrete  for our path.  Fingers crossed we are successful.

Here is our video for Fonterra...

Planting Begins!

On September 2nd we began planting in the first garden area...and guess what!  It rained most of the day.  But we still had fun.

Great News!

Our application to Fonterra for the concrete in our path was accepted!  We can now start looking forward to next term when we will lay our path in He Manu Whenua!

Fonterra Grass Roots Fund Response

Dear Fiona,
Re: Waipahihi Primary School
Thank you for your application for Fonterra Grass Roots funding received for the August 2015 call period. We received many strong applications from around the region, showing a huge variety of grass roots community initiatives. This made our selection process very difficult.
We are pleased to inform you, on behalf of the Committee, that your application has been successful in achieving support for the Grassroots-path concrete ($3,415.00 including GST), as we recognise the importance of our communities. Payment will be processed into your advised bank account. We will need an acknowledgement of receipt, please send this through to fonterragrassroots@fonterra.com
We wish you all the best with your initiative and please do not hesitate to get in contact if required by emailing bayofplentysponsorship@fonterra.com.
We would appreciate any feedback, photographs, or quotes about your initiative. Feel free to share with success on our facebook page www.facebook/fonterragrassroots or you can send it into us directly.
Kind regards,
The Fonterra Grass Roots Fund Sponsorship Committee

  3. Room 6 thinks that if you do mosaic tiles instead of fish you could do native birds and insects. They liked the plain concrete path the best, but we could add cool tiles to the plain concrete path. We also liked the wooden path.
We can't wait to see your final creation.

  4. Can't wait to see what it looks like when it is finished. I'll have to come and sneak a peak when it's done.
